It’s great to switch off from the online world, but I prefer doing that while supporting sustainability. This weekend, I joined the amazing Norfolk Beach Cleans group. It wasn’t my first beach clean, but my first with them. Norfolk Beach Cleans is a volunteer-led group promoting local action for a sustainable environment. We removed 21kg of waste from the beach, which felt incredible. There’s still loads more to do. Beach cleans really matter, and I recommend getting involved. Whether it’s a Norwich meetup or a beach clean, small actions support a more sustainable future.
Mitigating Climate Change Through Sea Sustainability
The sustainability of our seas is closely linked to the fight against climate change. Seas act as a natural carbon sink, absorbing a significant portion of the carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere. However, when polluted with waste, the sea’s ability to regulate the Earth’s climate is compromised. Therefore, stopping waste from entering the sea through beach cleans contribute to the broader effort to mitigate the effects of climate change.
Protecting Marine Life
The coastline is a thriving ecosystem, however the rich biodiversity is under threat from pollution, especially plastic waste. When left unchecked, this pollution can harm and kill wildlife. Marine animals can mistake plastic for food, leading to fatal consequences. By joining beach cleans, you help remove plastic waste, directly contributing to the survival of marine life.
Reducing Microplastics in the Sea
Plastic pollution doesn’t just stay on the beach. Over time, larger items break down into microplastics, which are tiny, almost invisible particles. These microplastics can enter the sea and eventually the food chain, affecting everything from small marine organisms to humans who consume seafood. Regular beach cleans are essential in removing plastic waste before it degrades, reducing the amount of microplastics in the sea. This is particularly important for areas like Norfolk, the place I call home, where the local economy and cuisine are closely tied to the health of the surrounding marine environment.
Mental Health and Well-being
Beach cleans are great for mental health, offering a chance to enjoy the outdoors, which can reduce stress and anxiety. The physical activity boosts mood, and the sense of contributing to a good cause enhances overall well-being while fostering a strong connection with nature.
Fighting for sustainability both within nature and the WordPress community
I would love to see you at a future beach clean, please contact me if you’re joining a Norfolk Beach Clean as I’d love to meet up with you. If you are a member of the WordPress community then join us in the WordPress Sustainability Team to discuss ways to make both WordPress and the community more sustainable going forwards.
