Please note: This article is aimed at developers of all levels who want to move into WordPress development. As an active member of several Slack groups, including the one I founded for the WordPress Norwich community, I frequently see the same question pop up: “How can I learn WordPress development?”
This recurring question is a great sign of growth within the WordPress community, and it’s always exciting to see new developers keen to dive into WordPress. However, I often find myself sharing the same advice and recommending the same resources.
That’s why I decided to create this article—a curated list of valuable resources for anyone looking to learn WordPress development. Whether you’re a beginner exploring WordPress for the first time or a seasoned developer looking to refine your skills, this guide aims to point you in the right direction.
If you’re part of an agency, organisation, or charity in need of help with your existing WordPress website, don’t hesitate to get in contact to discuss your project.
Join your local WordPress Meetup Group to learn more about WordPress development
The first thing I’ll recommend is to join your local WordPress Meetup Group. For example, WordPress Norwich Meetup includes people from all backgrounds with all skillsets and it is a really welcoming place to learn and network. WordPress has a strict code of conduct to make sure all meetups are safe and welcoming.

Join a WordPress focused Slack Community
There are some really good Slack Communities focused around WordPress. There is the official WordPress Slack Group and WordPress Slack Groups for various countries and regions. Although I can’t list all of them here, the main ones include the following:
- https://make.wordpress.org/chat/ (Official WP Slack Group)
- https://en-gb.wordpress.org/slack/ (WP UK Slack Group)
- https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/handbook/about/teams/local-slacks/ (Local WP Slack Groups)
- https://poststatus.com/ (PostStatus Members Slack – £££)
Official WordPress Documentation and Support Forums
Probably the best place to start if you’re new to WordPress is to have a read over the official WordPress guide. Once you have had a read over the basics then consider moving onto the official WordPress Theme Developer Handbook and the official WordPress Plugin Developer Handbook if you want to learn Plugin development at a later stage. Likely at this point you’ll want to focus on the WordPress Theme Developer Handbook. I also suggest getting familiar with the WordPress Support Forums because often you can find questions you may have are already answered, however, for more instant support see Slack above.
