This article is from a previous WordPress Norwich Meetup giving live WordPress Support, this is archived and may not be up to date.
For the February WordPress Norwich meetup we held a “WordPress Website Clinic” where people could come with any issues they have with their WordPress website. The turnout was fantastic, the room filled up quickly, and it was great to see many new faces. Sometimes a WordPress Website Clinic can be a low turn out but I think they’re a really important session and it was great to see it so full with everyone offering WordPress support and advice.
WordPress Website Support Clinic: for users, developers, account managers, project managers, creative agency owners and everyone else.
The WordPress Website Clinic is a much-needed event that welcomes people of all backgrounds, ages, and experience levels. It allows attendees to bring issues of any size, whether simple or complex.
- An SEO meta description issue.
- Gallery Block issue with adding imagery.
- Plugin issue for a gallery not displaying imagery correctly.
- How to monetise a WordPress website.
SEO meta description issue
One SEO issue raised was Google not showing the correct meta description in search results. We’re not SEO experts, so we suggested checking the local SEO Norwich meetup. We did share a few ideas. The outdated Google cache might cause the issue. Or Google may have picked a different page snippet it thinks is better.
WordPress Gallery Block issue
The Gallery Block issue with adding imagery was relating to an issue with being able to drag and drop images from the desktop to the gallery block in the admin area. Sadly, we didn’t have the issue in front of us so there was a lot of speculation with what this issue could have been. Potential issues could be: 1) Image file type is not supported, for example if taken from the iPhone the image extension is now HEIC, so would need to be converted to JPG or PNG. 2) Issue could have been a file size issue with the image file size being too big, therefore the image may need to be optimised first. 3) May be a WordPress JavaScript conflict with a plugin. 4) They may need to speak with their hosting provider.
WordPress gallery plugin issue
We diagnosed a gallery plugin issue where images weren’t displaying correctly. The plugin wasn’t outputting its stylesheet. In fact, no plugin stylesheets were loading on the site. This suggested the developer hadn’t set them to load. We gave a quick fix in case they couldn’t resolve the stylesheet issue directly.
How to monetise a WordPress website discussion
Someone asked how to monetise a WordPress website. Although it wasn’t strictly in scope, it sparked a great discussion. We focused on WordPress-specific tools and ideas. I suggested plugins for Google AdSense and Amazon affiliate links. Additionally, I mentioned using WooCommerce for selling merchandise directly through the site.
WordPress Website Clinics are important and helping debug WordPress issues face to face is insightful.
“WordPress Website Clinic” is essential for developers, account managers, project managers, and agency owners. Furthermore, it provides valuable insight into real user issues, which helps us all improve.
A talk on “How to Diagnose Your Own WordPress Website” could be really useful. It would first cover steps to narrow down issues. For instance, is it a plugin update, a hosting issue, or a JavaScript conflict? Tailoring the talk to “debugging” may be too open-ended, so a basic guide on diagnosing WordPress issues would work much better. Ultimately, this would help users identify and resolve common problems more effectively.
